Schools and Colleges

Many colleges and university campuses in Maine are currently collecting and composting the leaves and other organics from their grounds, creating a product that they can use to improve the gardens and the grounds, while avoiding the cost of disposing of those materials.

Members of the Maine Compost Team are available to assist schools and colleges interested in starting a composting operation, or expanding an existing composting operation.

With the state goal of recycling 50% of our solid waste, capturing food scraps at these institutions not only contributes positively to the state goal, but also provides the opportunity to teach students the value of organics recovery.

We’ve helped many grammar schools set up lunchtime food scrap recovery efforts, with those organics being composted at or near the school, with the compost being usedon the school’s vegetable garden, or on the school grounds.
